Iraq: "Merely a first step?"
By Carla Binion
Sep 11, 2002, 10:47am

The Boston Globe reports that the Bush administration war hawks have for many years planned to "reshape" the Middle East. Iraq is "merely a first step." "After an ouster of Hussein," according to the Globe, "the United States will have more leverage to act against Syria and Iran."

As the Globe article makes clear, oil and domination of the region are primary concerns, not any "threat" from Saddam Hussein. Some of the hawks claim they want to create "democracy" in the region, but they have lied about that concern in the past.

Hundreds Protest Possible War

BY ANGELA WATERCUTTER

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Hundreds of anti-war protesters marched and spoke out Saturday against any possible military action in Iraq.

``We believe that this war can be stopped if the people intervene in the political process,'' said Richard Becker of the International Act Now to Stop War and End Racism Coalition.

At the San Francisco rally attended by about 500 people, participants held signs saying, ``Stop the War In Iraq'' and ``Stop Bush's War At Home and Abroad.''

In Los Angeles, about 300 people marched and chanted ``George Bush, what do you say? Change regimes in the USA.'' at a federal building near the UCLA campus.

Editors Note: The size of the events were larger than the stories report. There are estimates that 2,000 attended the San Francisco event and as many as a thousand in Los Angeles.

Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War
Rev. Dr. George F. Regas

I don't want to be a part of any congregation that blesses war.

At the heart and core of the work of the Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace is this unshakeable conviction: Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence.

We disavow the path that affirms that grief must lead to war.

We refuse to accept violence as the necessary consequence of our tragic loss.

CHEAP TRICKS
or Why That Dog Won't Hunt

It's appalling, but true -- most people in this country don't know that we, the taxpayers, pay for the torture and slaughter (oh, excuse me - "experimentation") of hundreds of thousands of animals by our military each and every year. The bill, according to PETA, is roughly $100 million. Jeremy Sapienza of Antiwar.com put it nicely when he said: "Say what you will about Osama, but he used his own damn money to torture animals."

America's Auschwitz
by Tom Lash

In a Los Angeles Times article from September 13th, 2002, staff writer Richard Serrano, speaking about Camp Delta, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, writes:

"The makeshift prison for detainees from the Afghanistan war is being readied for long-term use and will likely continue to house terrorism suspects for at least three more years."
