The SHORTWAVE REPORT 8/23/02 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts Friday, Aug. 23, 2002 at 10:12 PM
outfarpress@saber.net 707 459-1760 PO Box 1162 Willits CA 95490

A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.4MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast upon notification. China, Germany, Cuba, and Netherlands

Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (August 23) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.4MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:26) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired at 7pm PDST this Friday evening at KZYX/Z Philo CA and you MIGHT be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org/ (It hasn't worked recently)
There are several other streams that work quite well- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PDST) and on Monday at 9amPDST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR at Fri 10:30PM/ Sat 10:30AM PM/ Sun 10:30AM PDST
and the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Deutsche Welle, Radio Havana Cuba, and Radio Netherlands.
From China- N Korea says that the newly launched military practice between S Korea and the US is intended to block dialogue between the 2 Koreas; the chief UN arms inspector says that the US threats of invading Iraq will not help persuade Iraq to allow weapons inspectors in, and a former inspector from Sweden says the US pressured them to gather other intelligence.
From Germany- first a press review from Wednesday, covering the hostage crisis at the Iraq embassy in Berlin, the true motivation for US threats against Iraq, and some history on how Iraq got its so-called weapons of mass destruction; Canada's defense minister says they will not help the US attack Iraq unless the use of mass-destruction weapons is imminent; then, from Man & Environment, a preview of next weeks UN Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, also known as Rio plus 10.
From Cuba- Geo Bush's announcement that he will not attend the UN Earth Summit is not a surprise, and the release of a letter of support for his decision delineates corporate thinking; the Columbian government is supporting the US demand that soldiers be exempt from the International Criminal Court; Venezuelan Pres Chavez criticizes the court ruling that the April coup plotters are not guilty of a crime.
From Netherlands- following the Newsweek story that hundreds or thousands of alleged Taliban forces were suffocated in cargo trucks, the US says it wants the Afghan government to investigate the story. Human rights activists believe the US should also do a thorough investigation.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
