Hollywood Blockbuster Demonizes "Anarchy"

by apache Saturday, Aug. 03, 2002 at 3:41 PM

The new Hollywood corporate product entitled "XXX," an action vehicle for African-American star Vin Diesel, demonizes the notion of anarchy with its plot and villains. The film is silly escapist entertainment, but indicative of the reactionary nature of contemporary popular culture in America.

As revealed in the pre-publicity currently saturating the Viacom owned and affiliated cable networks, the film stars Diesel as a "super-duper hero" who uses extreme measures to battle a crew of "sadistic" Russian (!??)

bad guys. The Russian villians are portrayed as a group of "anarchists" who wish to do away with all governments and order (that doesn't sound like a bad idea to me). Obviously, the film will be some silly

fodder for the youth market and other movie audiences, but one still wonders as to how it will add to

the stigmatization of the anarchist movement. And why are the Russians still considered the bad guys

when we have American and Israeli imperialists killing people all over the world.

Enough said. With America's fickle summer movie tastes this piece of corporate propaganda will go the way

of Spielberg's latest flop, "minority report."

Anarchist FAQ

by 000 Saturday, Aug. 03, 2002 at 4:33 PM

I am not surprised by this at all. We saw the demonization of anarchists during the DNC and elsewhere after the Seattle WTO protests. But it is quite laughable to see lack of depth they have when trying to create a villian for the hero to take down. The reality, of course, is events like Genoa and the killing of Carlo Guilliani.

Here is a really good FAQ about anarchism:

as long as the anarchists dress up in black, etc. they'll be playing right into the corporate hands and the disinformation of the media's plot to keep US citizens ignorant about the true definition of anarchy.

personally, i think the anarchist should take a role in the anti-globalization movements as a defense against cops. i think everytime there is a mass protest it should be the job of the anarchist to divert, subvert, distract and block the police. they should be in charge of protecting the protesters and helping them get the message across (which is really the cops' job right?) and what better way than dressing up as normal business people, in full suits and ties etc? or maybe a few as cops themselves. or maybe a few as hippies? they need to be more creative.

anyway...what scares me more about the movie "triple x" is the fact that the "russians" are the bad guys. I mean come on...if the bush administration is in cahoots with hollywood, this shit is just so demeaning and insulting to the intelligence of US citizens. Or is it?
