then.. well, there are distros around, like ABCF, and others but they're mostly at benefits, shows, events.
Skylight Bookstore at 1818 N. Vermont Blvd... near Sunset, is a good 'alternative' bookshop... they just hosted a talk by Greg Palast this week....
Espresso Mi Cultura has a good selection of books about Chicano culture and history, as well as other stuff. They're on Grammercy and Hollywood, in Hollywood.
There are some "New Age" bookstores that have political stuff, but they're generally pretty spotty.
Book Soup is an indie bookstore that's good. Located in West Hollywood, a little bit east of Tower on Sunset.
For gay and gender books, there's Different Light on Santa Monica in West Hollywood.
Sadly, there's no good general Asian American book store since the Amer-Asian closed up a while back. The Japanese American museum has a gift shop that doubles pretty well, though.
The newsstand at Cauhenga and Hollywood has a good selection of left (and right) magazines. They also have some Loompanics and Desert Moon books.
