Progressive Candidates Unite in Venice Election

Twelve Venice candidates are supporting a common platform in the June 13 inaugural election for the Grassroots Venice Neighborhood Council (GRVNC). The ?Grassoots Progressives? have come together to preserve the uniqueness and diversity of Venice.

The platform includes a call for more affordable housing, an expanded bus and rail system, healing racial, ethnic and economic divisions, improving the environment and quality of life, supporting local businesses and schools, and preserving the cultural and artistic life that makes Venice so unique.

The candidates and their offices include: Sheila Bernard (At-large); Andre Delattre (Treasurer); Phyllis Des Verney (At-large); Bridgett Gonzalez (District 2); Yolanda Miranda (At-large); Lydia Ponce (At-large); Elena Popp (Secretary); Pete Savino (District 4); James Smith (Communications Officer); Alice Stek, M.D. (District 7); Laddie Williams (At-large); Chris Wood (2nd Vice President).

The candidates have been involved in Venice community organizations and the formation of the Neighborhood Council. Two of the candidates are presidents of tenant unions, there is an attorney and a physician, and several are community or union organizers.

GRVNC was certified on March 13 after a couple of years of organizing. The neighborhood council system is part of the city of Los Angeles charter reform. The election of the GRVNC Board will be conducted at 7 pm, June 13 at the Venice United Methodist Church Community Room, 2210 Lincoln Blvd., Venice.
