Co-sponsored by the Armory Center for the Arts and

the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, SHOW:

The Flag is a collaborative exhibition of art with a

public discussion that focuses on the portrayal and

display of the American flag. Included are

historical works produced as early as the 1960s, as

well as artworks inspired by the September 11 attacks

and their aftermath. Historically, the flag has been

used to express patriotism, encourage enlistment, and

criticize public policy. It can embrace the ideals on

which this country was founded, court controversy and

dissent, or achieve both simultaneously. Viewer

response is encouraged, and visitors will be invited

to fill out comment forms about the show and the role

of the flag in American society. Civil dissent at this

moment seems in jeopardy, because it has recently

been interpreted as a threat to democracy; in fact, it

has always been at the heart of promoting a free and

democratic society. In the interest of addressing the

issue of free speech, a public dialogue hosted by

Carol Wells, Executive Director of the Center for the

Study of Political Graphics, with Carol Sobel, First

Amendment specialist with the ACLU, will be held in

conjunction with the exhibition on June 15, from 2 to

4 PM.
