Does Pacifica Matter? What is going on at KPFK? What is all this talk abuot democratizing the network?

The weekly program, Pacifica Matters -- a culture for democracy, will provide a free space for the listeners to speak and hear, to self-organize.

The primary function is to give the communities across the country a valuable tool to accomplish the task of self-governance, that is to find their own voice and desire with respect to Pacifica's governance. We have at our disposal a tool that wars have been waged for, this is a further imperative for us to utilize our radio network and develop the knowledge to exercise direct democracy, not only for ourselves but for others who struggle to achieve similar conditions in circumstances involving much graver stakes.

The secondary function is to provide analysis and information needed to make creative and informed demands and solutions. The multiplication of information does not on its own lead to harmonization of voices. As our diverse communities feel the power of their voice and engage in the hands-on work of this project we will be motivated to learn the information needed to solve problems. The best way to create the conditions for interest is to give access to power. The transmitters are power!

Listeners in all five signal areas are participating in this project through a series of national weekly teleconferences webcast live every Sunday at 4:00 PM EST. We are designing this radio program to be aired locally and simulcast nationally-three hours once a week of network-wide discussion and collective presentation. Listeners will be meeting locally face-to-face, calling in on air, and asking ourselves the questions necessary to develop the governing structures of Pacifica. If you would like to become involved by forming your own neighborhood group, or give your suggestions for discussion topics for the show, please leave a message at our toll-free number 877-905-0580.
