LOS ANGELES, April 8, 2002 -- Democracy When? Activist Strategizing in Los Angeles is an exhibition about activism in Los Angeles, or to be more correct, activisms in Los Angeles. Its participants come from a variety of communities and are struggling for social change for different reasons and in different ways. But even more, Democracy When? is an exhibition about the process of democratization and the various strategies employed by the participants toward that goal. In that sense, although the exhibition is locally focused, its scope goes well beyond the local.
Activists, organizers, and artists working within the field of activism today are faced with a new political geography that has radically changed the possibilities for action and made new demands on its practitioners. In a number of ways, the manner in which activist practitioners today are responding to this new political geography could be said to mark a departure from the strategies that informed activism of the past few decades, thereby setting their practices apart from those of the 1980s and 1990s. The tendency to equate civil dissent with terrorism as an effect of the current war against terrorism is but one reality, which has severely minimized the space for opposition and put severe restrictions on the activist strategies being employed in it. The heritage of the political lull 1990s and the public’s nostalgic distance from or loss of faith in the methodologies of past resistance movements; the neo-liberal and racist turn of more and more Western democracies and the effects that globalization has on labor, capital, information, and the environment worldwide are other circumstances facing contemporary activists and organizers.
Democracy When? takes this departure as its starting point. Bringing together thirty-five artists and artists collectives, activists and organizers, community organizations and activist groups, academics and theoreticians from a number of different communities in greater Los Angeles, the exhibition asks how they approach activism today. In order to provide a platform upon which this question can be addressed from the perspective of these various practitioners, Democracy When? merges the medium of the exhibition, the round table, and the production site into one. The result is a think tank in which some of the internal and external challenges facing activism today can be collectively addressed on a theoretical and a practical level by the participants as well as the audiences. Instead of focusing on activist responses to one particular social or political problem, Democracy When? provides a self-reflexive laboratory situation for the collective exchange, rethinking, and development of activist strategies per se in light of the new political geography of the 21st century.
To initiate this collective exchange, the exhibition identifies a number of the challenges facing activism today in six so-called "problematics":
--Coming to Activism After the Emergence of Identity Politics --Inhabiting the Activist Role in a Post-September 11 Climate --Activist and Community Organization Strategies --The Commodification of "The Rebel" Vs. Activist Media Infiltration --Activism and Capital --Activism as Direct Action Vs. Activism as Art
The problematics structure the six-week exhibition period and will be addressed through displayed artworks and projects, a series of "Open Session Discussions," and temporary events, actions, and interventions. The result is an exhibition in continuous development, in which works, projects, actions, and information accumulate and exchange throughout the exhibition period.
Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions was founded on principles that are at the core of Democracy When?, principles that remain as vital today as they were twenty-five years ago. This exhibition takes as its starting point the ways in which creative thinking and new approaches are required to affect change - social, political, and artistic. Both this institution and this exhibition claim the need for an essential, critical reexamination of the radical actions from which they have grown. The legacies each have inherited mandate no less.

Democracy When? is a thesis exhibition presented for the Master of Arts in Critical and Curatorial Studies, UCLA Department of Art, in conjunction with the UCLA Hammer Museum and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. "Divestiture Booth": For the duration of Democracy When?, Michael Baers, or a willing replacement, will voluntarily remove the identifying labels from the exterior of people’s clothing or footwear for six hours each week. He will be in front of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Hollywood on Thursdays, from 3 - 6 pm, and in front of, across the street from, or in the Babylon Court of the Hollywood and Highland Mall, Hollywood on Sundays, from 1 -4 pm.

LOS ÁNGELES, Abril 8, 2002 -- ¿Democracia Cuando? Activistas y Estrategias en Los Ángeles es una exhibición sobre activismo en Los Ángeles, o para ser mas exactos, activismos en Los Ángeles. Sus participantes provienen de una variedad de comunidades y están luchando por el cambio social, por diferentes razones y en diferentes formas. Pero además, ¿Democracia Cuando? es una exhibición sobre el proceso de democratización y las diferentes estrategias empleadas por los participantes hacia ese objetivo. En ese sentido, a pesar de que la exhibición esta enfocada localmente, su ámbito va mas allá de lo local.
Activistas, organizadores y artistas trabajando en el campo del activismo ahora se encuentran con una nueva geografía política que ha cambiado radicalmente las posibilidades para la acción y ha creado nuevas demandas para sus practicantes. En un numero de maneras la forma en la cual los activistas practicantes ahora están respondiendo a esta nueva geografía política que se puede decir marca la salida de las estrategias que el activismo informado de las ultimas décadas, por eso creando sus practicas aparte de aquellas de los 1980 y 1990. La tendencia para equiparar la disidencia civil con el terrorismo como un efecto de la actual Guerra en contra del terrorismo es solo una realidad, la cual ha minimizado severamente el espacio para la oposición y ha puesto severas restricciones en las estrategias activistas que están siendo empleadas. La herencia de la calma política de 1990 y la distancia nostálgica del público o la pérdida de la fe en la metodología de los movimientos de resistencia del pasado. El cambio neo-liberal y racista de mas y mas democracias del occidente y los efectos que la globalización tiene en el labor, capital, información y el medio ambiente a nivel mundial son las circunstancias que enfrentan los activistas y organizadores contemporáneos.
¿Democracia Cuando? hace de esta marcha como su punto de partida. Reuniendo a treinta y cinco artistas y colectivas de artistas, activistas y organizadores, organizaciones comunitarias y grupos activistas, académicos y teóricos de un numero de diferentes comunidades en Los Ángeles. La pregunta puede ser tomada desde la perspectiva de estos varios practicantes, ¿Democracia Cuando? fusiona el médium de la exhibición, la mesa redonda, y el sitio de producción en uno. El resultado es el "think thank" en el cual alguno de los retos internos y externos que enfrenta el activismo ahora puede ser dirigidos colectivamente a un nivel teórico y practico por los participantes y por las audiencias. Las problemáticas estructuran esta exhibición en este periodo de seis semanas y serán confrontadas a través de los trabajos de arte y proyectos presentados, una serie de "Sesiones de Discusión Abierta" y eventos temporales, acciones e intervenciones. El resultado es una exhibición en continuo desarrollo en la cual trabajos, proyectos, acciones e información se acumulan e intercambian a través del periodo de exhibición.
Los Ángeles Contemporary Exhibitions fue fundada bajo principios que están al centro de ¿Democracia Cuando?, principios que continúan siendo tan vitales ahora como hace 25 años. Esta exhibición toma como punto de partida las formas en las cuales el pensamiento creativo y nuevos acercamientos son necesarios para afectar el cambio - social, político y artístico. 8 "Sexo y el Voto" presentado por Sarah Lewison & Nicole Cousino. 19 "UFO Open House:" Venga y vea como el programa Dome Village of Justiceville/Homeless USA de sociedad en Solano Canyon Community Garden esta construyendo un jardin urbano, hortaliza y parque artictico en una parcela previamente sin usarse. El parque prove trabajo para las personas sin casa e individuos en recuperacion en colaboración con la comunidad de jardineros locales y escuelas prepriumarias para crear el programa un inovativo programa de siembra de plantas. 12 - 2 pm, Solano Canyon Community Garden, Los Angeles.
