Grand Central Market Holds Contest to Choose Artwork for Mural Project

LOS ANGELES, CA—Downtown’s historic Grand Central Market is looking for a
talented young artist to create an image that will be reproduced as a mural
on one of the market's walls.

As L.A.'s oldest and largest market of its kind, Grand Central seeks to
celebrate the artistry of LA youth, while helping to introduce the landmark
to a new generation of Angelenos. The theme of the contest is "The Spirit of
Grand Central Market," and Grand Central is looking for artwork that will
communicate the vibrancy, diversity and history of the Market to it's
visitors .

"This contest is part of the Market’s overall initiative to enhance the
environment of Downtown’s historic core, acknowledge preservation efforts,
and engage youth in the process of discovering local history. We believe our
mural contest accomplishes these objectives," said Filomena Eriman, General
Manager of Grand Central Market.

The winning artist will receive name recognition, as well as a $1000 cash
prize. The artist's school and art teacher will receive $500 each. A
winner's reception will be held this summer to recognize the winning entry.

The contest is open to all 9th through 12th graders who attend schools in
the Los Angeles Unified School District. Applications and guidelines have
been distributed to art teachers through the LAUSD, and are available to
everyone at the Grand Central Market. The deadline for entries is June 30,
2002.
