Low Power FM Community Radio conference coming up April 13th and 14th in Oroville, CA. Part of the growing media democracy movement.

Bird Street Media Takes To The Airwaves!

Community Radio Barnraising Conference

A radio "barn raising" conference and master class for new LPFM

radio stations and applicants will be held April 12 to 14th in

Oroville, CA. Oroville is just 70 miles North of Sacramento and is

the gateway to the Sierra Nevada mountain range. In the spirit of

neighbors pulling together to put up a new building, we'll gather low

power radio applicants, journalists, radio engineers, students,

lawyers, musicians, activists and all sorts of folks from across the

western United States to raise the antenna mast, build the studio ...

and flip on the station switch at the end of the weekend! The

conference is being sponsored by the Prometheus Radio Project and

hosted by Bird Street Media Project.

Bird Street Media Project plans to use their radio station to give a

voice to their community. With over twelve thousand in the city

limits, and 45,000 in the greater Oroville area, the citizens are

lacking the basic information and entertainment that most cities

derive from a local radio station. This project will be the town's

only local media outlet, since there is no community based newspaper,

TV, or radio station in Oroville. Recently, Clear Channel Inc.

bought the local AM and FM radio stations and moved their base out of

town. Support for the new LPFM has poured in from all sectors of the

town, from city government, activists, local business and artists.

All believe that the radio station could be a centerpiece for a

downtown renaissance.

The radio barnraising will be held in the springtime, when Oroville

and the nearby mountains are most beautiful. The event will allow

new programmers to meet and new stations to compare notes on

fundraising and equipment. In addition, broadcast professionals can

share their skills with the new low power radio station licensees. We

will also plan the course for media activism for the next year, and

plot for the continued fight to put the media into the hands of the

people and communities.
