SILKWOOD
Karen Silkwood was a courageous woman. She died doing what she thought was right: protecting the lives of her coworkers and the public. It was her concern about the dangerous health and safety working conditions at Kerr-McGee Nuclear Corporation's Facility in Oklahoma that prompted her activism and willingness to challenge corrupt corporate behavior.
Remembering Silkwood's legacy in this 58 minute radio drama will be many who fought alongside her to make the company's criminally negligent behavior an issue. Joining in the special tribute is actress Meryl Streep who helped immortalize the Silkwood’s story in film. The music of Toshi Reagon, Sweet Honey and Alice Coltrain highlight and
help tell the story of Silkwood. Their lyrical strains stand out in frightening relief against the terrifying sounds of sirens announcing radiation breaches and the contamination of workers.
The story of Silkwood, a "stand-up girl" is the story of the class struggle.From the needle trades workers around the world and at home, to the poultry workers in Hamlet, North Carolina, who like the young women before them
who burnt to death at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, when the bosses locked the exits, Silkwood embodies the feminist inspiration to better our work environment and the society for all.
