REDS & BLACKLISTS IN HOLLYWOOD

Political Struggles in the Movie Industry

(photo shows demonstrators protesting the arrest of the "Hollywood Ten." The 10 were accused by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)of being "Communists").

This innovative installation is presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills California. The multi-media exhibit explores the causes and consequences of the struggles surrounding the issue of 'Communism' within the film industry. A combination of photographs, audio-tapes, documentary footage and motion picture excepts, will tell of the anti-Communist hysteria that seized Hollywood. The exhibit, curated by Historian Larry Ceplair, opens on February 1st and is free to the public.

Ceplair has this to say about the exhibit: "The lessons of that time should not be forgotten. For those who did not live through it, this exhibition is being designed to help them understand a time in the United States when one's political attitudes, activities or associations could be used to intimidate, coerce and even destroy."

The Academy Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and weekends from noon to 6:00 p.m. 8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills.

Running in conjunction with the exhibit will be a series of Films that explore political themes.

HALF PAST AUTUMN - THE LIFE AND WORKS OF GORDON PARKS

.... is a must see documentary on the African American Artist (screens Feb. 12th).

THE INTERNATIONAL

... documents the history of the song (written during the Paris Commune of 1871), that became the anthem of the International Workers Movement (screens Feb. 19th).
