Mr. Katz’s speech is a book talk with his co-author Laurie Lehman of their new book. The Cruel Years: American Voices at the Dawn of the 20th Century offers a vivid, poignant, and candid glimpse of the turmoil, oppression andinjustice around the turn of the 19th century through the words of 22 working women and men who reveal the anger, despair, and resiliency of their lives.
Rev. Jackson spoke at the recent AFL-CIO Convention in Las Vegas.Held in the midst of war and recession, AFL-CIO Pres Sweeney had affirmed his support of Bush’s war abroad but challenged bush’s war on labor and the poor at home. Labor had been unsuccessfully attempting to ride the crest of positive public opinion from labor’s heroism and hard work after the WTC catastrophe to legislative victory in Congress.Jackson challenged labor to mobilize for victory, to march and demonstrate.
