Outline of How to Do an October 22nd - National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality, Repression $ the Criminalization of a Generation PRESENTATION. Now it the Time for EVERYONE to start building for this year's O22!

OUTLINE FOR OCTOBER 22nd PRESENATION ON CAMPUSES

1. Introduce yourself.

**"I am with the Youth/Student Network of the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression and the Criminalization of a Generation."

(You can, of course, introduce yourself as being from any organization you want.)

The Youth/Student Network is open to ANYONE who agrees with the slogan: STOP POLICE BRUTALITY, REPRESSION & THE CRIMINALIZATION OF A GENERATION.

**Feel free to briefly talk about why you, yourself, got involved in the movement to stop police brutality.

2. Give a BRIEF intro on the Coalition

**The National Day of Protest (October 22nd) was initiated in 1996 as a response to the epidemic of police murder and violence in this country.

**It was started by families of victims, lawyers, revolutionaries and community organizers. **This October 22nd, 2001 will be the 6th National Day of Protest

**Last October 22nd over 12,000 people from over 70 areas around the country (youth, lawyers, clergy, musicians, students, teachers and others) took part in the National Day of Protest.

**Our movement has begun to change the atmosphere nationwide where families of victims of police murder and brutality feel the strength of a national movement to STEP OUT AND DEMAND JUSTICE. We have forced people from Bill Clinton to Mayor Guiliani to have to answer for police murders, profiling and brutality.

3.Ask 3 Questions:

**How many people know someone who has been affected by police brutality? (Includes getting harassed, profiled, pulled over, etc.)

**How many people have been personally affected by police brutality?

**How many people know someone who was killed by the police?

(Next, ask people who raised their hands to talk about what happened to them or someone they know--if people don't volunteer then just pick people and ask them to please share their experience.)

Get as many stories out as you can but save some room for strategizing about Oct22nd)

4.We also work on the Stolen Lives Project.

This project was initiated by our coalition, the National Lawyers Guild and the Anthony Baez Foundation. (Anthoney Baez was playing football with his brothers on Dec. 22nd 1994. The football hit a cop car. Anthony was choked to death by Officer Francis Livoti NYPD in front of his family. They buried him on Christmas day.)

**Book contains 2,000 names of people murdered by Law Enforcement

**First time these statistics have ever been collected even though in 1994 the Federal Government was mandated to do so.

**When doing research for the book we found that in this country you can get statistics on everything from how many bikes are stolen, how many people own dogs.statistics on homicides, crimes--but there is no accounting anywhere of how many people have been killed by the police.

**Book is more than statistics. It is a tribute to the lives that the police have stolen from us (SHOW BOOK AND PASS IT AROUND IF YOU HAVE ONE! **Fighting thru the cover-up. You'll see a story on TV and they'll say, "Suspect shot in a shoot-out," not; "We just shot an unarmed 14 year old boy in the back." This is what happened Julio Castillo.

**Families victimized 3 times: 1. When loved one murdered. 2.When their loved one is portrayed as a criminal who deserved to be killed. 3. When families are targeted for harassment for demanding JUSTICE.

3. WHY IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO TAKE TO THE STREETS ON MONDAY OCTOBER 22nd!

**Our hearts go out to the many people grieving the loss of a loved one from the Sept 11 tragedy because we know what it is like to have someone we love leave the house in the morning and never come back. Our loved ones were killed by cops.

**In Detroit 19 year old Talena Carpenter was shot in the head by police while sitting in her car outside a neighborhood store on Sept 16th. The police cordoned off the area and refused to let her be taken to a hospital for an hour. She is now clinging to life.

**In Cincinnati the cop who shot and killed 19 year old Timothy Thomas was found not guilty by judge after a trial where he faced a max of only 9 months for stealing a Black man's life.

**Some of the people who were arrested for the protesting this murder face up to 15 years. **The murder and brutality hasn't stopped --SO OUR RESISTANCE TO THIS OFFICAL BRUTALITY CANNOT STOP!

**Racial profiling is WRONG whether it's aimed at Black and Latino people on the New Jersey Turnpike of Arab-Americans in airports and other places.

**They want to use the War on Terrorism to criminalize Arabs and Muslims just like they used the War on Drugs and the War on Crime to criminalize a whole generation of Black and Latino.

**Now more than ever we must fight the government's efforts to use this situation to expand repressive laws and policies.

4. Strategize with people how they can help build for October 22nd and How they are going to get there. Get them flyers to pass out, etc.
