Protests in Washington

Thousands of protesters marched through downtown Washington Saturday, combining their
anti-capitalist messages with anti-war slogans.
Many anticipate military strikes against Afghanistan after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington and say they oppose any U.S. government policy that promotes war. Protesters and police clashed in the streets during marches to the World Bank and Capitol Hill. Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrance W. Gainer spalshed water on his face after pepper spray was used during the march.
Counter-demostraters supporting U.S. troops and the government also voiced their opinions.
