BORDERHACKERS ASSEMBLE TO DELETE THE BORDER
Culture does not recognize the imaginary line drawn at the border. Tijuana and San Diego may in fact be one city that got divided by an absurd artifact of fascist architecture, a fence of intimidating proportions, supposedly constructed to differentiate the first from the third world. The fence and the ideology that supports it have given birth to such oppressive concepts as 'illegal aliens' and maquiladoras.
Beginning August 24 and continuing through the weekend a gathering of artists, activists plan to camp out in the shadow of that very fence and explore what it might take to DELETE THE BORDER. For the second consecutive year Borderhack 2.0 will be erected at Playas de Tijuana next to the light tower which is located northwest of the bullfighting ring by the sea. A puppet making workshop will follow the camp inauguration at 1:00 PM Friday August 24. Starhawk will be on hand for workshop presentations for both Friday and Saturday. Other workshops include a forum on pacifism vs. destruction, coordination without centralization, how to build unity ties in the border and how to build a Tijuana IMC.
Simultaneous to the workshops there will be projection of video documentaries, net radio transmission, Independent FM Radio and live video feeds on-line. As DSL lines will be made available at the camp Independent Media Center reporters will be posting 'live' coverage to the LA IMC site.
The event was designed to be interactive (someone had referred to the event as a 'Burning Man for nerds'). Many participants have promised to bring installations of their own. A street theater and DJ/sound collage presentation will offer additional opportunities to get participate directly. Finally, each evening will feature a musical event by Club Orbit.
Participants may camp or day-trip as their schedule allows. All events are free but donations will be requested to cover logistics and food. Participants are asked to bring their own sleeping bag, tent, water and cooking utensils. Identification is perhaps necessary should you be crossing the boarder, as is auto insurance should you be taking a vehicle into Mexico. It is requested that there be no alcohol, no drugs, no weapons and that we respect local culture and nonviolence.
