San Diego Biojustice Protests: Did the Police Overreact?

by Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine Tuesday, Jul. 31, 2001 at 8:32 PM

The San Diego Action Network held a debate July 27 on the topic, "Biojustice: Did the Police Overreact?" But the debate was one-sided because the city, the police and downtown business groups all refused to participate. Instead representatives of Biojustice and the National Lawyers' Guild discussed police abuses during the June 24-27 BIO 2001 convention in San Diego, and the San Diego IMC debuted a 10-minute video documenting the oppressive police presence.

they're like an urban military

they definatly did overreact. Then again, that's their job...... They came there ready to fuck with people. They had infiltrators EVERYWHERE. They had so many pigs, and FBI targeting the blackbloc which consisted no more than 20 peaceful demonstrators marching together in black. The pigs continuesly harrased people. They WANTED something to happen so they could go off on their police riots and beat everyone down. They came there ready for battle. It was obvious. They even had infiltrators holding banners.

I hope one of these days they come out to another demonstration with all their pretty riot toys, and end up beating down their own infiltrators.

Police state?

by i was there Thursday, Aug. 02, 2001 at 1:48 PM

Staring down 3-4 rows of cops in riot gear after being herded into what was essentially a kill box made me realize just how bad it has gotten. Prior to Biojustice, I did have to force myself to realize what could happen as a result of mere attendence at the protest. It wasn't going to keep me away, but it is a sad time when you have to accept the fact that you could be arrested or seriously injured for standing against a defunct system. I would say they overreacted. I also would say that it is the police and media, not the Bloc itself that is causing fear and distrust among the spectators.
