UT postings

by zigs Monday, Jul. 02, 2001 at 1:34 AM

Quoting the union tribune??? That article wasn't too bad but come on...the UT represents all we fight against - the corporate controlled media. Notice not one mention that several of the people arrensted were NOT protesters (including the two dagger charges). Not one mention of the outrageous protester profiling and harassment (stopping people for jaywalking, spitting, and riding a bicycle on the grass!). What about the morning breakfast where seven protesters were acompanied by dozens of police, a helicopter, and rooftop surveilance while they ate breakfast! I'm sure there are a ton of stories people have of the action here in San Diego. What we need is to compile the stories of the people who were here into a publication...or maybe just have people post about their experiences. Anything is better than quoting the UT...

Some pimply faced kid who has a picture of Che on his wall, who has no idea that THAT was all about??? You are "fighting"???? Do you even know what that word means??? If you are that kind of warrior than I am Ali, or even his daughter!!!! Don Quitote should be your role model.

I'm not going to waste my time explaining to you who or what I am. You need to calm down a bit there...(and the conservatives say liberals get too emotional..sheesh!)

Stop Spamming; Kids Commended

by Justice Monday, Jul. 02, 2001 at 9:49 AM

This appears to be the 4th article from the capitalist press posted on this Independent Media. We all read the capitalist press and do not need it posted it on Independent Media. The purpose of Independent Media is for those who have news from the workingclass to have it posted as we all know the capitalist press either does not report or distorts the news from the workingclass communities. This spamming must be stopped. I hope this Independent Media site stops it.

As to the young people attending this biotechnology conference in an area that is votes reactionary, is highly militarized and is filled with biotechnology companies, it appears from the pictures posted here that they did an excellent job. I am very impressed by the imagination and hard work demonstrated by the various costumes to illustrate the protests againt the misuse of biotechnology.

I do not agree that the anti-abortion crowd is an ally of the biotechnology protests as not all biotechnology is bad. It can be used for either good or bad purposes. From my reading, I have learned that fetal tissue is useful to combat certain ailments. Vaccines can be considered biotechnology since they use one disease or a form of one disease to combat either the same disease or another disease.

What impresses me the most is the willingness of all the young people to expend so much energy to get to these conferences, come up with ways for dramatizing their political ideas, and carry out their actions. They should be commended and encouraged for their efforts. It is time for my generation to pass the torch, and I can see that passing is succeeding beyond our wildest dreams. All I ask is that the focus always be on the workingclass as labor must lead this time.

zig, he ain't your friend. I bet he ain't his wife's friend either.

Mr McDonald says there is a summary in the UT (if I read his shorthand right and he didn't say this post is the summary)but anyway, this is not the UT peice, which belongs to his bosses, not to him. Maybe he wanted to say something here, emphasise a point as it wasn't in the dependent media where he works. It's not like when some third or fouth hand party posts beetle lyrics or whatever, it's not like he pulled it off the paper. He is the author, he was there, this is his experience. Don't attack merely because of the commercial source tie-in Find a substantive problem and discus that. Or perhaps this is a reasonable summary and a guy from Them can actually report for Us. Been a lot of this in Seattle since we had a nice little strike. We just keep winning hearts and minds. Day after day. peon after peon, city worker after county. So somebody please call him- you got the phone book and its local. Treat him like a human. See if he's a possible coconspirator.

Justice is right-SD is a tough audience. I spent 2 years hard time (high school-60's) and do not remember the political situation fondly. You are fortunate to have kids responding. I guess even there the suburbs are getting it. Can't lie to kids forever. Just don't stop educating them beyond the knee jerk resistance that is nearly s reflex to revulsion once you open their eyes. Don't let them exhaust themselves in rage- focus focus focus

Lib again- you may not choose to believe they (prolife/antigmfood) are allies. Or may wish they weren't on the same side of the issue as you. You may feel uncomfortable rubbing shoulders. But that has no effect on their position.

And the point of biotech food technology? The point of having reservations and missgivings? I did not think it was about "good" apps only and ban "bad" apps. The criteria isn't the possible good (vaccine is a perfect example) the criteria is the ballance of good vs bad effects. It's the possibility of superweeds, not the "we can feed starving people" aspects that control our decisions. Or should be-Hell if it was just the "goodness" of what we were aiming at, we'd still all be behind lots of creepy stuff. Eugenics, the disavowed child of progressive america has noble 'good' in mind. Still, i'd rather not. Vaccines are a danger not because they really have bad intentions behind them, but because of the untoward consequences. Look beyond form to intentions, then look again at form, then come back and look again..
