Subject: BIO Conference June 22-27
As many of you may know from watching the news lately, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is holding its annual conference in San Diego later this month. Because these conferences have attracted violent protests in the past, San Diego is gearing up to deal with disruptions and possible vandalism. As always, the open environment of a university campus makes it easy for protestors and others to voice their opposition to research being done here. Those on campus with research that may draw the interest of these protestors are preparing extra security measures t protect campus facilities, the people who work in them, and the research that is done there.
I thought that all of you might like to be aware that there may be protests downtown during this period, and that those might possibly spread to UCSD. If you have any fears that your departments might be the target of these protestors, you might want to contact Al Jenkins, crime prevention officer for the UCSD police, to alert him to your concerns.
We hope of course that only peaceful protests will be taking place, and there is no concrete evidence that we will be targeted. But it never hurts to be prepared.
