NOW IS THE TIME!! UCSD JANITORS AND STUDENTS TAKE BACK THE UNIVERSITY!! FRIDAY, JUNE 1st 12 PM
Rally Begins at 12 pm
UCSD Price Center Plaza
ONE MONTH AGO, on MAY 1st - May Day - Over 400 students, janitors and community members marched and protested after the OZOMATLI concert for UCSD non-union janitors. That event showed the San Diego community the strength of the growing movement of janitors & students at UCSD.
FINALLY AFTER 3 weeks and after students were assaulted by the administration, the administration has arranged a meeting with the students. However, we need to maintain the pressure and energy --- Alejandra Rodriguez, a former janitor was fired because she was organizing for a union and better wages. She is still fired and janitors are still living in poverty. Before school ends, please come and support the janitors!
THESE ARE OUR DEMANDS
FIRST Rehire Alejandra and provide her with full back-pay for the
days she did not work and a public apology.
SECOND we believe that the university should set higher standards and contract with union contractors that:
1) Pay the San Diego living wage of .24 / hour;
2) Provide family health insurance, sick days, and holidays for all janitors;
3) Respect workers' rights, including the right to organize, and is in compliance with all labor and employment laws.
