Stop the FTAA

San Diego--NAFTA and the WTO have demonstrated that without enforceable labor rights standards and clear mechanisms for monitoring, enforcement, and accountability, free trade agreements cannot guarantee against labor rights abuses. Unless labor rights clauses are contained in the core language of the trade agreement texts, there is little way to fight against violations of workers' basic right to freedom of association. Kysa and Juvelino Fonseca gathered with hundreds of activists minutes from the Tijuana border to protest against another agreement - the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Estamos aquí protestando por la globalización porque no estamos de acuerdo de esa forma de querer explotar el pueblo. (We are here protesting globalization because we do not agree with the way that it exploits people). (Saturday 21 April 2001 - David Hanks/Global Exchange)
