Among the very first official acts of newly elected President George W. Bush, who is no fan of U.S. aid for international population assistance, is whether or not to impose the onerous Global Gag Rule. This policy could deny U.S. population assistance funding to organizations that 1) provide legal abortion services using their own, non-U.S. funds or 2) participate in public debates about abortion, again, using their own, non-U.S. funds.

5th Annual Capitol Hill Days

March 24 - 27, 2000

Washington, DC

Start planning now! Join ZPG in Washington, DC for the 5th Annual Capitol Hill Days event March 24-27, 2001. Now more than ever before, we need your help to protect international population assistance on Capitol Hill!

Why?

Among the very first official acts of newly elected President George W. Bush, who is no fan of U.S. aid for international population assistance, is whether or not to impose the onerous Global Gag Rule. This policy could deny U.S. population assistance funding to organizations that 1) provide legal abortion services using their own, non-U.S. funds or 2) participate in public debates about abortion, again, using their own, non-U.S. funds.

In short, the gag rule could force many health care providers to choose between providing needed services and participating in their own country's political process. If imposed fully, the policy threatens to undermine decades of progress in providing family planning and slowing population growth. We need lawmakers to send a strong message to President Bush that reimposing the gag rule is not acceptable!

So what can you do?

Come to Washington, DC in March to help defeat efforts to re-impose the global gag rule! Capitol Hill Days is a once-a-year opportunity for ZPG members to meet with their members of Congress, to learn about the latest developments in the population field, exchange ideas and network. Washington, DC also provides an array of social, cultural and educational activities.

Note: There is small pool of funding available for travel and/or housing scholarships for ZPG members.
