Clinton Grants Clemency to Two Drug War Prisoners

Due to the holidays, Drug Policy News will be on hiatus until
January 5th. However, we wanted to inform you of some
fantastic news:

President Clinton has granted clemency today to two drug war
prisoners sentenced to unconscionably long sentences for minor
offenses, Kemba Smith (who was serving a 24 year sentence)
and Dorothy Gaines (who was serving a 19 year sentence.) Both
Kemba and Dorothy were released from prison today and will be
spending the holidays with their families. Clinton is still reviewing
clemency petitions for hundreds of other prisoners and may very
well grant clemency to other drug war prisoners before his term
ends on January20th.

To read a news report on today's grants of clemency, see:
http://www.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/12/22/clinton.pardon.02/index.html

Also, see today's USA Today for a great article on various
campaigns to pressure Clinton to grant clemency to drug war
prisoners:
http://www.usatoday.com/usatonline/20001222/2939159s.htm

There is still time to pressure President Clinton to release more
prisoners. Please read the following action alert by the Coalition
for Jubilee Clemency to find out what you can do to help:

You have heard about the Coalition for Jubilee Clemency's
letter to President Clinton asking him to grant clemencies to low-
level, nonviolent offenders. More than 675 faith leaders have now
endorsed the letter (a list of signers is at
http://www.cjpf.org/clemency/signers.html ).

We are still gathering signatures at http://www.cjpf.org/clemency  .
Please ask your friends to forward this appeal to their rabbi,
minister, priest, imam, or faith leader to sign the letter to
President Clinton, referring them to our Web site.

The Coalition for Jubilee Clemency has been receiving excellent
media attention. Following are links to a few of the many articles
nationwide that support our campaign:

December 20, 2000:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/article/0,2669,SAV-0012200425,FF.html

PLEASE HELP US by calling the White House or writing a
letter to President Clinton and making a personal appeal to the
President in your own words to grant clemency to low-level,
nonviolent drug offenders. U.S. Pardon Attorney Roger Adams
advised us in our recent meeting with him that public pressure
on the White House is the most effective way for us to realize
commutations for low-level, nonviolent offenders. In your phone
call or letter to the President, please (1) make a PERSONAL
appeal to the President to grant clemency to low-level,
nonviolent drug offenders before he leaves office on January
20, 2001, and (2) describe your involvement with the Campaign
for Jubilee Clemency.

Please send a copy of your letter to us at the address at the
bottom of this message.

Here are a couple of resources which may help you write a letter:

"News freed from the suits." ;-) Apologies to freethinkers forced to wear suits at work.

Friendly Fascism. Talking heads and smiling faces. Politicians, pundits, and pastors. You know the similarity between a shark and a smiling face? They both show their teeth! As the 1960's song goes: "Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies, they don't tell the truth...." How can you tell when most politicians are lying? Their lips are moving!

"One nation under God." (& Ralph Reed, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell). -GOP.

*9-00. Med. Use of Marijuana Finds Support Among [NCC] Pastors. "Similar to a recent Ellison survey on the death penalty, the study found stronger support for medicinal marijuana use from pastors affiliated with the National Council of Churches [NCC] as opposed to the more conservative National Association of Evangelicals. Among National Council of Churches-affiliated pastors, 66 percent supported medicinal marijuana use while 33 percent opposed it. The numbers were almost exactly opposite for National Association of Evangelicals-affiliated pastors, with only 31 percent supporting it and 69 percent opposed."

The GOP (Republican Party), in cooperation with the Paleo-Republicans of the Rabid Right and the Religious Right, has created, sponsored, and pushed through the vast majority of bad U.S. drug-war legislation. The rightist Taliban wing of the GOP leads. Democrats follow. Vote against the Republicans, the greatest of the political and spiritual evils in the USA today. The GOP is now led by rich, American fundamentalist, fanatic, finger-wagging, pontificating, hypocritical, pseudo-spiritual, false-prophet, bible-thumpers. Republican Senator John McCain told the truth about Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell during the 2000 U.S. Republican presidential primary!

Expose the GOP Jihad to the light of day, and those bible-thumping, pseudo-spiritual, blathering, sanctimonious hypocrites will scurry away.

GREEN TRIANGLE. Color-coded holy wars.

During Nazi rule those thought to be a threat to the
Fatherland were taken prisoner and placed in con-
centration camps. These prisoners were from many
different social and cultural backgrounds. To
distinguish between the prisoners, the Nazis
used a system of color coded cloth badges.
Jews were given yellow stars; half-Jews
were given yellow triangles; feminists
were given black triangles; Gypsies
were given brown; and gay men,
pink. The green triangle was
given to 'common criminals' or
those who had been convicted
of minor crimes, including
drug law violators. At
the time of Nazi rule,
a very stringent set
of anti-drug laws
was in effect --
laws that were
very similar
to those
used now
in the
U.S.
