The press reports that if the Bush campaign fails in its attempt to suppress the hand recounts of voters' ballots that are provided by Florida law, as seems likely, then they will implement a "scorched- earth" plan involving legal challenges to the election outcomes in Iowa, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wisconsin.

If the envisioned scorched-earth plan does come to pass then it will
be important to monitor the regional newspapers in Iowa, New Mexico,
Oregon, and Wisconsin. To that end, some very excellent RRE readers
have assembled guides to the regional newspapers and other relevant
online resources in those states. I have enclosed them here: two for
Iowa, followed by one each for the other states. I have edited and
reformatted them, but they are not my work. Nor have I tested the
URL's myself. I assume they're fine.
Let me just add that one of my favorite words in the whole English
language is "slugfest". It's gotten a lot of exercise this week.
****** IOWA ******
Here are some URL's for Iowa papers:
Des Moines Register
http://www.DesMoinesRegister.com/
(used to be the independent paper of Iowa -- only local paper in the
country to be distributed as the major paper in all counties in the
state -- taken over by Gannett in the last decade or so but still has
good columnists)
DMR on the potential recount:

(Johnson County is where Iowa City is located, arguably the most
liberal/progressive city in the state, home of the University of Iowa
and a century of progressive activism)

Here are the major papers covering Iowa. The Des Moines Register is
THE state newspaper, with statewide readership. The Omaha World Herald
is widely read in the western third of the state. The remainder are
from Iowa's larger cities, with Ames and Iowa City being the homes of
the universities.
