Holy wars and drug wars. The USA has to stop supporting and funding death squads. The USA is sending billions of dollars of support, military equipment, and training to governments that have been shown by numerous human rights groups to be directly and indirectly responsible for many death squad murders. What is particularly disturbing is that fundamentalist religious fanatics are often the strongest supporters of escalating this violence, and who refuse to compromise.

The drug war is also supported far more strongly among evangelical fundamentalist Christians according to recent polls. In the middle east it is the hardliner fundamentalists among the Jews and Moslems who are keeping these holy wars of hate going on.

Reuters articles below say that Israel's own investigations laid responsibility for the 1982 massacres of over 600 Palestinians in Lebanon on religious-right-winger Ariel Sharon. Now the center-left leader of Israel, Barak, wants to form a coalition government with a death-squad war criminal.

"The latest spate of Israeli-Palestinian clashes that have dashed hopes for a Middle East peace deal soon was sparked by Sharon's September 28 visit to the Temple Mount or al-Haram al-Sharif, a Jerusalem shrine holy to Jews and Muslims. French authorities afterwards said Sharon should be especially singled out for blame."

"Israel has used disproportionate and indiscriminate force against civilians in the current violence in the Middle East, according to a scathing report published on Thursday by three European human rights groups. The report blasted Israel for resorting to live fire rather than conventional anti-riot equipment 'resulting in widespread death and injuries among Palestinians.' It said ammunition used included illegal dum-dum bullets, a charge denied by Israel. Also used were explosive bullets and LAW anti-tank rockets 'which resulted in serious injuries and loss of life when used against not just violent demonstrators but also peaceful protests and local residents,' the report said. ... The mission concluded that Israeli authorities provoked violent demonstrations by using excessive force against peaceful protests. It blamed them for 'terrorising civilians...attacking peaceful individuals and private homes...and directly attacking ambulances and killing ambulance personnel.' "

PARIS, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Israel has used disproportionate and indiscriminate force against civilians in the current violence in the Middle East, according to a scathing report published on Thursday by three European human rights groups.

The report blasted Israel for resorting to live fire rather than conventional anti-riot equipment ``resulting in widespread death and injuries among Palestinians.''

It said ammunition used included illegal dum-dum bullets, a charge denied by Israel.

Also used were explosive bullets and LAW anti-tank rockets ``which resulted in serious injuries and loss of life when used against not just violent demonstrators but also peaceful protests and local residents,'' the report said.

The report was compiled by a four-man investigative mission which toured the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Arab-inhabited areas of Israel from October 4-8.

The investigators represented the International Federation for Human Rights, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Netowrk and the International Committee of Jurists.

The mission concluded that Israeli authorities provoked violent demonstrations by using excessive force against peaceful protests.

It blamed them for ``terrorising civilians...attacking peaceful individuals and private homes...and directly attacking ambulances and killing ambulance personnel.''

On the Palestinian side, the mission found there was some limited use of firearms by Palestinians but most of their violence has taken the form of stone-throwing and to a much lesser extent the use of Molotov cocktails.

A copy of the report was sent to Israeli authorities, its authors said.

Israel's Sharon expected in Paris next week.

http://live.altavista.com/scripts/editorial.dll?ei=2266763&ern=y

10/13/00

PARIS, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Israeli right-wing opposition leader Ariel Sharon, held responsible by Arabs for a recent orgy of violence, is expected in Paris next Tuesday for a lecture on the Middle East crisis, his French sympathisers said.

``The visit is still on,'' said a spokeswoman for the French friends of Sharon's Likud party, when asked if developments in Israel might scuttle the visit.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak met Sharon in Jerusalem early on Friday and invited him to join a national emergency government after a day of spiralling Palestinian-Israeli violence.

Sharon dodged earlier calls to join Barak's left-centre coalition. The hawkish leader's participation in the government would probably harden its positions in peacemaking with the Palestinians, if not finish off the process itself.

The latest spate of Israeli-Palestinian clashes that have dashed hopes for a Middle East peace deal soon was sparked by Sharon's September 28 visit to the Temple Mount or al-Haram al-Sharif, a Jerusalem shrine holy to Jews and Muslims.

French authorities afterwards said Sharon should be especially singled out for blame.

Israel's Barak seeks coalition with Ariel Sharon.

10/12/00

JERUSALEM, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on Thursday he hoped to form a ``national emergency government'' swiftly with the participation of right-winger Ariel Sharon, a leading opponent of peace deals with the Palestinians.

``The right thing to do is a national emergency government, even if it takes three or four days to set it up,'' Barak said after a Palestinian mob killed two Israeli soldiers and Israel launched retaliatory helicopter gunship raids.

``Ariel Sharon is a deserving, serious man and definitely a very important partner for a national emergency government and obviously in such a government he could be influential. He is not a man whose presence could be ignored in the governments in which he served,'' Barak told a news conference.

The Likud party leader, Sharon has yet to say he would join a coalition led by Barak, head of the left-centre One Israel faction. His participation would likely harden Israeli positions in any future peacemaking with the Palestinians.

Bringing Sharon into the government would also anger the Arab world and some of Israel's allies who have assailed his highly publicised September 28 visit to a Jerusalem shrine holy to Jews and Muslims.

Palestinians said his visit had ``defiled'' the site.

Many Arabs hate Sharon because he led the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. An Israeli inquiry found him indirectly responsible for a massacre of Palestinian refugees by Israel's Christian militia allies at the Sabra and Shatila camps outside Beirut.

Sharon last served in an Israeli government as foreign minister under Benjamin Netanyahu, who was defeated by Barak in the prime ministerial election in 1999.
