Arms?

by Chuck0 Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000 at 11:40 AM
chuck@tao.ca

Are any of the anarchists going to take up arms?

No, of course not. That would be suicidal. The American Police State has plenty of weapons at its disposal. Anarchism is about changing social relations, not armed struggle.

As if there is not a plethora of diversity within the anarchists movement, which argueable substantiates the fact that YOU in no way can represent such a coalition (let alone with your knee jerk reactions!).
By the away, ever hear of VIETNAM-were the US military was rendered infertile against a fairly small Guerella army?

Ten guys armed with rusty shotguns and a couple of rifles could dash in and out of urban, suburban and rural areas causing complete havoc with ease... How do you think this whacked-ass country was able to succede from the brits.

To those trying to entrap protestors.......

by velvet glove or iron fist Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000 at 12:19 PM

If you are an honest person, who doesn't watch any TV news press conferences given by anarchists, or doesn't read any print media, or doesn't check this site for the protest issues, then I suggest you do a little homework.

If you are trying to entrap protestors that might respond to you,
then I suggest you see:
U.S. District Judge Dean D. Pregerson's injunciton barring "unlawful harrassment" of protestors by police, on Aug. 11, 2000;
and LA Times article, Aug. 12, "LAPD Capt. Michael R. Moore, the new commander of the Rampart Division, said in a sworn declaration filed Friday that if one of the allegations made in the plaintiffs' (protestors) suit was accurate it represented police misconduct."

arms, ideas and social revolution

by loki Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000 at 1:57 PM

i will provide a more lengthy editorial on the importance of protecting 2nd ammendment rights later. for the time being i want to point out the futility of direct warfare:

1) the machine of state is much better armed and organized;

2) our movement needs to be more universal in its acceptance before armed resistence and revolution can have a political effect (we believe in democracy, right?);

3) the characterization of the justice movement as a source of terrorist activity has had considerable effect in achieving pr victories in support of repressive police techniques.

also, where do you get this small group of white men bullshit --- look at the photos which were posted here on monday, they are suggestive of a large involvement by people of color.

HOld Up

by CL0S Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000 at 2:27 PM

I must say, I agree with loki. I tire of the sensible hesitation to take to violence as timidity or compromise. I empathize immensely with the rage and frustration, sitting here watching the mainstream media with a barf bag handy and a hoarse voice! A huge part of me longs to see that whole goddam building burn like the MOVE house in philly, goddamit. But that is the trap; we are in no way positioned as yet to take on the fucking LAPD not to mention the certainly-present paramilitary forces present in the streets of LA. First we put in the long work to win hearts and minds of all working people of all colors, that is, do the nitty gritty shit necessary. Look at Indymedia! - this shit is just beginning to proliferate with mass success, let's run with this conscious medium. If it comes to arms and fire we need just as much preparation as the Vietcong - just the ideology and anger is simply not enough.

Arms are inevitable for any real change

by Janx (RCYB) Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000 at 9:48 AM

Armed uprising and revolution is inevitable, as this repressive system clamps down more and more, the masses, not just white males, will increasingly step up their resistance to it. To affect any real change it is impossible to think that anything less than armed revolution would be sufficient. We are not in a situation where this is possible, YET. And to say that oppressors would allow change and progress, which in turn would take power from them is naive and shows little understanding of capitalism or imperialism. At som point the anarchists will probably take up arms, as will the Revolutionary Communists and many other diverse groups, however... not yet.

you can't blow up a social relationship

by archan Monday, Aug. 21, 2000 at 7:48 PM

prepare yourself for pedantry:

vietnam: the americans got fucked up because they were not
accustomed to jungle warfare, because they were especially
not accustomed to guerilla jungle warfare, and many other
reasons. the cops, on the other hand, are perfectly at home
in the cities in which they have trained and in which they
spend their days. this, combined with the technology and
the sheer numbers they now have at their disposal, makes
them a formidable foe.

let's be honest. *THE ONLY REASON THE COPS HAVE NOT
COMPLETELY DECIMATED EVERY PROTEST IN THEIR RESPECTIVE
CITIES IS BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY HAVE NOT BEEN ORDERED TO DO
SO*. even the cops and their bosses realize that waging
open war on political protest itself still does not have
public support.

but guess what would give open warfare on activists complete
public support? a few fucking dolts with guns and black
flags, that's what.

the cops have a lot of guns and a lot of armour. if that
isn't enough, the army has fucking tanks and flamethrowers.
if you rise up, they will destroy you.

which brings us to the american revolution: to compare the
environment of pre-revolutionary america to our current
situation is absurd. back then, people who *opposed*
revolution were in the minority. today it is still the other
way around.

just like the cops can't wage war without public support,
neither can we.

look at history. every society that has been overthrown
before its time by a violent minority vanguard has been
replaced with a society held together by even more
violence.

IF YOU TORE DOWN THIS SOCIETY TOMORROW, ONE OF TWO THINGS
WOULD HAPPEN: PEOPLE WOULD BUILD IT BACK UP BECAUSE FOR NOW
IT'S ALL THEY KNOW, OR YOU WOULD HAVE TO KEEP USING VIOLENCE
TO KEEP YOUR MOMENTUM AND NEW SOCIETY. At which point we
would become *precisely* what we hate.

i suspect many people who call for open armed rebellion have
never even been witness to a modest police riot. class war
is not glamorous, folks, no matter who wages it. it is
bloody, terrible, scarring, perverted business, and you will
have to kill a lot of people - thus making the whole
"fighting for the people" thing a little absurd when it
turns into fighting against the people - and probably end
up getting killed yourself.

the american revolution was a groundswell of almost the
entire population. seattle was cool, but it was not the
population. and even look at paris in '68 - they had
the support of all the workers, and i'd say were very close
to a true uprising. but then the military would have come
in. even they were a long way from change, and we're nowhere
near the kind of anger there was in paris '68.

but the numbers are growing at an inspiring rate. reach out
to people. show them what you want society to be rather
than putting a gun to their heads and saying "make it
happen."

i sympathize with the rage. oh god, how i sympathize. but
you owe it to the movement to not play into their hands
and give them a reason to kill you, your sisters, and your
brothers.
