The U'wa protestors who were marching to Al Gore's Headquarters to protest his vested interest in Occidental Petroleum are being rounded up by police at 6th and Flower as of 12:55. Over 200 protestors are in the fray as police corner them for arrests. 15-20 have already been arrested as police try to corner the others. Police presence is heavy as the peaceful demonstrators attempt to excercise their first amendment rights.
Sorry for my ignorance. What does U'WA stand for?
KDC
It's the name of a native tribe in Colombia. See the article on the newswire about the U'WA and Occidental petroleum. Also, check out ran.org for the info on their campaign to save the U'WA.
For those of you too lazy to click to another page, let it be known that the U'WA are an tribe of indigenous people who live in what is now Columbia. They're traditional homeland, and with it their whole way of life, are being threatened by oil drilling at the hands of Occidental Petroleum's(Oxy). Oxy has legally bribed (donated campaign funds) to Al Gore. The U'Wa have in the past (sorry I can't remember the exact date) committed mass suicide to aviod enslavement by Spanish conquistadores. They have threatened to committ another mass suicide if Oxy continues to care out it's plans for increased extraction of known oil reserves, an act which the U'Wa refer to as "stealling the blood of Mother Earth"
Oh no, not Oxy again. They tried to eat Pacific Palisades for 30 years, and we had a lot more stock holders than the U'wa do. Yorty got voted out over this, and Armand Hammer went to his grave babbling something about core holes on PCH. Rosebud.
The more things change.....
