U'wa March

by IMC Collective Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000 at 8:51 AM

The U'wa peoples of Colombian Amazonia are being displaced by the drilling activity of Oxidental Petroleum. Oxy is a large campaign donor of Al Gore, but more troubling is Gore 600,000 dollars worth of Oxy stock.

More proprietary video formats

by Silly Rabbit Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000 at 9:25 AM

Oh well, I guess I'll just go with out, "independant media", until I can go back to being dependent on Microsoft Windows or Apples Macintosh and RealWhatever(tm). It's too bad so many people choose to depend on these corporations to view thier, "independent", media. I guess after I shell out a hundred dollars for poor ol Bill Gates, then I can view the news. It kind of takes the, "in", out of independent when you have no choice but to either pay one of these companys an unfair amount for a crappy piece of SW or steal a crappy piece of software. As far as I am concerned, Windows and Macintosh are virus's and RealAudio(tm) is an intelligence gathering tool.

Maybie you guys could just post a transcript or something... provide links to resources on the same subject as the RealVideo(tm) video.

I really love IMC, but I'm locked out of a lot of news because I refuse to pay the corprate software masters. Understand?

Thanx

Just Drumming, Officer

by Jon Sherman Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000 at 12:31 PM
jon@rokcircle.com 828-249-3352 Los Angeles County

I was the drummer you hear in the background of this video.

On our way back from Staples Center, I was near the front of the parade with some other drummers. Someone came up and said that there was a civil disobediance happening in the intersection and that they could use our support. I was making my way back, through the crowd, when our parade was forcibly split in half by the cops, using their batons as weapons. In my opinion, they didn't want us supporting, in solidarity, those who were putting their asses on the line by peacefully sitting down in the intersection. So I was violently pushed into the intersection (which is where I wanted to be anyway!) split off from the rest of the parade, who were also violently pushed back in the opposite direction. I then heard an anouncement by the police to clear the intersection by moving north. Well, I looked around, surrounded by tall buildings and wasn't quite sure which way north was. So I asked I cop. He looked around, puzzled, and said, "Just wait for further instructions."

Which is what I did. But in the meantime I was going to drum for those sitting down, as they were still chanting and could use a beat for encouragement. My drum is a Native American hand drum, and I was taught that it represents the heart beat of Mother Earth. That's what I told the police too. And I told them this drum is for the people, which included them. That that it's strength is for everyone. I believe that the earths's heartbeat is the source that powers our revolution, as it powers everything that turns and circulates through the web of life. So for this revolution to be effective, I believe that it can't exclude anyone.

So I'm standing in the intersection, drumming for eveyone, and I feel that as long as the Press are also there, I can be there too. The police then tell the Press to leave, and I figure it's time for me as well to just step outside the intersection, since I didn't plan on being arrested today. But at first they won't let me leave with the Press. The officer who blocks my depature from the intersection tell's me, in a sadistic way, "It's because we like you". Someone must have realized how many cameras were rolling, and told him to let me out.

I kept on drumming, just outside the intersection, till the last activist was arrested, and untill the police allowed me to walk back to Pershing Square the way I came. Which I think was East. :-)

the CD'ers did want support, very much

by Jom Ama Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000 at 6:38 PM

hey i helped take part in the cd action (support and legal support) and i know those people personally. trust me they wanted support badly... the main problem is that the rest of the crowd wasn't filled in because the RAN guy who was supposed to get to the front and fill people in on what was happenning didn't get there fast enough.
i think they were happy to see people who went around the block to come back to the intersection and offer their support and act as witnesses. thanks for the drumming by the way.
sincerely
Jom Ama
