"No More Ramparts!" March Rolls Out

by Edison Carter Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at 5:21 PM

Hundreds protesting police brutality rolled out from MacArthur Park accompanied with puppets, song, a rolling stage, positive vibes and a commitment to non-violence. Destination: the Ramparts division of the LAPD, to publically deliver a list of grievances.

LA was a police state

I work for a very liberal California Democratic Congresswoman and attended most of the convention as part of my job. I am appalled, but not surprised, at the massive and uncalled for presence of "peace officers" in Downtown L.A. and the Staples Center. The way that protestors were treated and criminalzed in the weeks before the convention shows that the police are there just to protect the property and money of the rich and busting heads of the people who are trying to keep the dream of democracy alive in this nation. What the protestors in the streets were doing is what America is about. But the powers that be want to keep us stupid, fat and silent. We cannot allow that. Our freedom to say what we feel is right and wrong and to make our voices heard without oppression is fundamental. This whole nation should be ashamed of what has happened in Phili and L.A. Caring about human rights, the environment and labor rights should not be a reason to be targeted and thrown in jail. We must stay in the streets and make our voices heard. There must be an alternative media that is not controlled by corporate money but is about getting out the truth.

FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY TO DO WHAT YOUR TOLD

I was at the police brutality march and rally on weds. The rights to freedom and democracy only existed for the rich and corperate. F*ck the police. I think every single LAPD officer should be ashamed of themselv's to know who they work for. A Law enforcement for the criminals. Why? because rich corperations need to be protected. Why? because the rich and the corperate run this country... They can't lose their pretty little money, their hidden agendas and their power. Otherwise we win, and that's what they are against. The people. Freedom is FREEDUMB in this country. The resistance will rise. Just because the Demokkkratic Conventions are over does not mean this movement is over. This is only the begining.
