Labor to play major role in D2K protests

by Michael Everett Tuesday, Aug. 01, 2000 at 12:50 AM

On July 29, the DNC adopted a strong anti-labor platform asking labor to support passage of fast track and strengthening of the WTO, and rejecting universal health care and a living wage. Labor will be in the streets in full force at the D2K protests to send a message that we will NOT roll over for the corporate free trade agenda.

Sit Down For Labor

by Flint Jones
flint@iww.org

Stand up for Labor? Aid our delegates inside the Democratic Party?

The AFL-CIO is spending a record amount of member's dues this year on the elections, and still we can't compete against those Billionaires for Bush (or Gore). If the Democratic party fails to include atleast even a few token planks in their platform of lip service to labor's support... then none of us should be suprised. The Democrats haven't backed labor in a long time.

The power of labor has never been in spending members dues on political elections for those "friends of labor", for those who seem like the lesser of two evils... every time. It's like trying to pick which boss you want to boss you, or which capialist you want to exploit you.

Labor's power is in it's ability to organize a refusal to labor. I say, Sit Down for Labor! Slow Down! Sit Down! Bring Direct Action back into the Labor Movement!

If the Labor movement increases direct action, then politicians will fall all over themselves offering reforms, but this attempt by labor to buy politicians like they were corporations is stupid. Organized labor doesn't even represent a majority of potential voters... at best a large special interest group, is how politicians view us. Our power is in our ability to refuse work.

Direct Action Gets the Goods!
