Bicyclists Arrested

by IMC Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 at 2:41 AM

Over 100 bicycle activists were arrested last night while riding through downtown Los Angeles.

Over 100 bicycle activists were arrested last night while riding through downtown Los Angeles. The group, members of critical mass, were detained for over three hours on the corner of 18th and flower, hand-cuffed packed into vans and taken to jail. Riot cops surrounded the activists, refusing to allow the press or the D2K legal team to speak to those detained. They pulled out their batons and even rubber pellet guns while police took pictures of the activists and the crowd. The Critical mass bike ride began at about 5:45 in the afternoon with nearly 250 riders. They were followed by police for 45 minutes before they were cornered and arrested. The police had no explanation as to what the cyclists were charged with.

Post photos of the ride!

by bikerx Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 at 3:41 AM

Wow. Post photos of the ride. that many people cycling in downtown LA is monumental. CMers have got to rake an effective cycling class and obey the traffic signals. Several Positives would result. NO ARRESTS, LONGER RIDES, MORE FUN (drivers can't get pissed at riders doing what we bikecommuters do all the time, obey laws). MORE IMPACT. Remember even cops are starting to use bikes instead of cars, the idea is to get as many people to leave their cars at home as possible.
