Join Us for a Presentation and Booksigning with Miko Peled, author of "The General's Son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine" at the door
"There are few books on the Palestine/Israel issue that seem as hopeful to me as this one..." Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker
"The General's Son" is a groundbreaking memoir of Miko Peled's life and his transformation from an Israeli-born Jew, unquestioning of Zionism, to condemnation of the Zionist state as an apartheid regime. As the son of a renowned Israeli general, Peled tells about growing up in Jerusalem in the heart of the group that ruled Israel. He takes us through his service in the country's military and his subsequent global travels....and then, after his 13-year old niece Smadar's killing by two young suicide bombers in Jerusalem, shaken and questioning why, Peled is profoundly impacted by his sister's stand. When pressed by the Israeli media if she wants revenge, she says, "These two young men were driven to such despair and hopelessness that they took their own lives and the lives of innocent civilians, including my little girl. They were driven to this despair by the brutal Israeli occupation, by the cruel oppression that we, Israel, had placed upon them...I hold the state of Israel responsible for my daughter's death."
"Miko did not automatically follow in the footsteps of his remarkable father-a hawkish general turned Arabist and early proponent of a two-state solution in dialogue with the PLO. Instead, we are privileged to accompany the author on his own fascinating internal odyssey...culminating in poignant advocacy of a unitary binational state anchored in common humanity." Walid Khalidi, General Secretary, Institute for Palestine Studies
In November 2012, a brutal wave of targeted and indiscriminate killing, destruction and terror rained down on the Palestinian people in Gaza by Israel - fully backed by the U.S. Peled has stepped out to oppose this latest assault speaking at protests in Los Angeles (exposing the Israeli Defense Forces at a "gala fundraiser" for the IDF), at the Israeli Embassy in Washington D.C. and in front of the White House. Come hear and meet the courageous Miko Peled.
