Brothers & Sisters:
The war on Iraq is imminent and as the principal international issue of the time, the correlation of the political forces worldwide is shifting and the worldwide debate is on. In this context, the thinking of the US Latino community will either go with the flow of right wing imperial patriotism in support of President Bush and the war or it will join the progressive and humanist forces that are struggling to stop the massive and brutal assault that is about to come and soon against the people of Iraq.
Up to now, the Latino leadership, from the elected officials, to labor, to the national organizations, in the entertainment industry, churches, schools, etc. have not yet taken the lead in educating and mobilizing our community against the new imperial war. As in the past, going all the way back to the Chicano Moratorium against the Viet Nam war and the many struggles of our people there on, it is imperative that Latino activists come to the forefront and create the conditions for the mass mobilization of our communities and put the fire on the straggling leadership. It is up to us.
For this reason we are extending an invitation to all of you interested in forming an ad hoc committee to map out a minimal strategy to begin the arduous task of convening a broad Latino coalition against the war and the massive mobilization of Latinos into the antiwar movement.
Many Latinos had participated on 01/11/03 antiwar coalition protest march in downtown Los Angeles. We gather as Latinos that we need to be more participating in future action against the War in Iraq and anywhere else in the world.
