download PDF (529.6 kibibytes) There has been a powerful strand of progressive thought that has emerged directly from the culture wars over science and the social gospel movement. These reformers argued that Christians should apply the teachings of scripture to public problems. For example, Dorothy Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. pushed for values of religious activism leading to the civil rights movement. American progressive history would not have been possible without the inspirational values and moral authority of the socially conscious progressive movement. Progressive Christians have been a consistent support for the separation of church and state.

Progressives today come in many stripes, and nonbelievers and believers alike have managed to find common ground on key areas from climate change and poverty to war and social policy. This discussion will explore the religious roots of progressivism and provide a basis for a discussion about the role of faith in progressive politics and how they support and are supported by the separation of church and state.
