Against State Terror Open Mic

Saturday, May 13 at 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM PDT

Casa Solidaria Del Sur - Solidarity House of the South

4163 S Central Ave, Los Angeles, California 90011

Join Solidarity House of the South on May 13th from 6-9pm at our next poetry night.

We will be honoring the warriors of the MOVE organization who were killed in their Philadelphia home when the police dropped a bomb and let the entire block burn to the ground on May 13, 1985. MOVE?s work is revolution, a revolution to stop man?s system from imposing on life, to stop industry from poisoning the air, water, and soil and to put an end to the enslavement of all life. MOVE works to demonstrate that people not only can fight this system, they must fight the system if they ever want to free themselves from endless suffering and oppression.

We will also be commemorating the lives of the 41 girls killed by the state of Guatemala on March 8th, 2017. The Virgen de Asuncion shelter for abused teens up to 18 years old was run by the Ministry of Social Welfare and had received complaints in the past over overcrowded living conditions and other abuses (including sexual assaults by the staff). Despite its capacity to hold only 500, the shelter reportedly housed more than 800 children. Some of the girls had been locked in a small room and left to die after trying to escape from the shelter on the eve of International Women's Day.

We will also be fundrasing for Michael Boddie's legal defense fund, Michael is a beloved, well known and respected member of the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Village Lemeirt Park Community. He is the father of three beautiful children, a 4, 6, and 17 year old. He is a mentor, father figure, confidant and older brother to many young people in and around the community. From his previous workplace, to his home and into the streets, Michael has a documented history of being unfairly targeted, harassed and abused by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). This accumulated into Michael being one of 15 people in the community (including super seniors) arrested during a SWAT-Operated LAPD Raid on March 2nd, 2017 in the community. For 1 month and without any legal justification, Michael was held in State Custody and his children were seized under DCFS Custody. His friends, neighborhood youth who look up to Michael and other supporters defended this brother and fought for his release! On April 4th, 2017, Michael was released on bail. Despite his temporary victory, Michael's fight for freedom, incarceration, police harassment and violence is far from over. The Friends of Michael Boddie know that LAPD and State is targeting him to remove him from his loved-ones and putting him behind bars.
