International Solidarity Days for the Farm are taking place July 7-10, bringing people from around the world together in solidarity with the farmers of South Central L.A. Solidarity Days are being held to raise awareness about the farmers’ struggle against developers and individual politicians in addressing the quality of life in South Central Los Angeles, one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, and to let local politicians know that the world is watching. Like-minded supporters all over the world want to make their cities more livable, reflecting the rapidly growing global movement for food security, green development, urban farming and environmental and social justice for all. Event details: South Central Farmers' Day of Solidarity
Expressions of solidarity from the newswire:

  • On July 1st, The Southwest Museum closed. The Autry National Center, which owns it, claims the future of the museum is secure, while Friends of the Southwest Museum is concerned about the lack of a concrete plan and whether or not relocating parts of the museum to Griffith Park is necessarily the best scenario. The lack of a tangible plan as well as a claimed scarcity of public input has fueled suspicion by the Coalition as to the owner’s true motive. The Mayor’s Human Resources Office has been sponsoring a series of community forums to encourage public input regarding the future of the Southwest Museum. The most recent one was held on June 29th in Highland Park. (Information about the next one, to be in Exposition Park, follows this article.) ...

    ALERT: BULLDOZERS BACK ON FARM

    SOUTH CENTRAL: July 6, 2006
  • 3:45 PM Update – Eye witnesses from the farm say that the bulldozer is still operating and that most of the farm has been plowed under. The Old Walnut Tree is still standing at this time. The tree is said to be protected by city ordinance. There is no guarantee that Horowitz will respect that ordinance. Additional direct action plans have been halted due to injuries from yesterday’s police violence and the potential for more police violence. Farmers have expressed gratitude to those who took action to defend the farm, but have asked that no one else put themselves at risk on their behalf. Police have been very brutal with those arrested yesterday and the courts are said to be setting very high bail for arrestees. Nine of the ten arrested yesterday have been released, one is still in jail and is set to be released soon. Despite the destruction of their crops the farmers plan to continue fighting to take back the land.
  • 11:45 AM - Caller from the farm reports bulldozer in operation. The sound of the bulldozer heard in the background. More than half of farm plowed under.
  • 10:30 AM - Farm supporters have called for a march through the local neighborhood today. Gather at 5:30 pm on the sidewalks at Martin Luther King and Alameda. See calendar for details: MARCH FOR THE SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS
  • 9:00 AM Caller reports bulldozer has broken down. Appears that chainlink fencing has become entangled in the treads. Bulldozer has cleared plots along 41st. Old Walnut tree still standing at this time.
  • 8:00 AM – Caller reports bulldozer now working South side of farm. Numerous LAPD cars circling the farm. Police have NOT closed off streets, Streets to farm remain open . Some more supporters have arrived, but many more are still needed.
  • 7:30 AM, FARM UPDATE: Caller from farm reports only one bulldozer in operation, working North side of farm at this time. Farmers are calling for more supporters. Only about 35 people there now. Farmers are pleading for more support. Most of South side of farm still untouched. Many crops still worth saving. Farmers say: The Fight is NOT over!
  • 6:20 AM, ALERT - There is a report that Horowitz has started bulldozing Southern half of farm Lots of tractors and bulldozers have been reported seen. The call is out for all supporters to converge to the site for direct action. The farm is located at 41st & Long Beach Blvd

  • SOUTH CENTRAL, July 5, 2006 - The North side of the farm was badly damaged today but due to direct action the bulldozing was stopped and the South side is still intact. The direct action resulted in 10 arrests, some for felony vandalism, but it was successful in disabling the bulldozer. The bulldozer was disabled by dropping zucchini into the exhaust pipe. Farmers are on high alert should the bulldozer be repaired or another one show up early tomorrow morning. Eye witnesses report numerous cases of police violence against farmers. The farmers are not giving up and vow to continue their resistance against the destruction of their farm by any means necessary.

LOS ANGELES, July 4, 2006 – Ignoring pleas from immigrants rights activists, the Mayor knowingly rode in a parade with the minuteman group. Three days of phone calls and emails to parade organizers and elected officials failed to get the permit for the minutemen revoked. Instead the spectacle of the anti-immigrant minutemen and the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles in the same parade played out. The minuteman contingent was dogged the length of the parade by immigrants rights supporters. The Minutemen were greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos from parade viewers. At the end of parade there was an incident with the minutemen that resulted in the arrest of one of the immigrants rights supporters. From the newswire: VIDEO: Mayor in parade with Minutemen
