Protest and More Protests
This Saturday, the 13th, a protest at the Westwood Federal Building against the war on terrorism has been called again. Along with being anti-war, it also calls into questions civil liberties restrictions and Star Wars.

Any organizations planning events around this demonstration of peace, please post to the calendar or the newswire. -webitorialistas

Noam Chomsky on the US relations in the middle east, militarization and it's impact on India and Pakistan, and censorship, self and imposed, in the media. The following interview was conducted via email on October 5, 2001.

[ the interview ] A woman or child is raped or killed on average every six seconds in Angeles City, Philippines. An estimated 150,000 girls work in Angeles City, Philippines as prostitutes, of that about 30,000 are girls as young as six years of age. Despite the fact that prostitution is illegal in Angeles not one person has been convicted of this crime.

Draconian Anti-Terrorist Bill Stalled
In the hysteria of war, politicians are scrambling to pad their voting records with support for anything to make them look "tough on terrorism", even if it means tramping on our civil liberties. Senator Russ Feingold is calling for a discussion about the bill authored by the Senate, before it's voted upon. His stalling forces the vote to be taken next week, rather than today, leaving civil libertarians with time to take action. Photo: would be 'terrorist' group.

Madeleine Albright Protest
Around 100 demonstrators called for an end to both the sanctions against Iraq, and the bombing of Afghanistan, at a rally at the University of Southern California (USC) outside of an auditorium where former Secretary of State Madeleine Albight gave a speech on foreign relations. Read the Report Back, below.

The generals have declared an information/propaganda war, and the TV news repeats old footage of food aid/food bomb dispersals to Iraq. A short list of antidotes to the barrage of info-war:

The Senate Judiciary Committee has drafted its own anti-terrorist legislation that the ACLU sees as more draconian then the house version. It allows for less judicial oversite on wiretaps and spying on American citizens. Read the ACLU Report Tonight, October 9th, the US senate will vote on this Bill S1510- soon it's on to the Presidents's desk.PHONE OR FAX YOUR SENATORS IMMEDIATELY.

Nobel Peace Laureates from Nelson Mandela (South Africa) to Rigoberta Menchu Tum (Guatemala) to the Dalai Lama (Tibet) to Jody Williams (The International Campaign to Ban Landmines) speak out about September 11 and the U.S. response. They speak as individuals, and their views are divergent. Read their comments

Meanwhile, irrationalism has taken hold in the US, again: owners of Afghan hounds are facing discrimination.

Demands For Peace Across Southland, A Summary of Public Action Against War
Protests around Los Angeles and San Diego have drawn activists together to call for and end to war, and for sustainable solutions to conflict and terrorism.
  • San Diego photos, Horton Plaza, Sunday: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • San Diego, report, audio
  • ...for more SD info, see Activist San Diego

  • ...demonstrators in Westwood were ordered off the lawn in front of the Federal building. Despite this, they protested the attacks.
  • ...scroll down for more Westwood information.

Protests are planned today, Monday Oct. 8, for the Federal Building in Westwood and a number of other places across the country.

[ Announcement of Protests ] What's Happened: What's Been Said:
With protests confusingly called for 12:00, 1:00 and 5:00 pm, the Westwood protests grew gradually in size throughout the early afternoon.
  • Roughly 150-200 people were present at the peak between 2 & 3 PM.
  • Earlier, Jim Lafferty of the National Lawyers Guild negotiated an arrangement with federal agents allowing limited space for protesters along Wilshire Blvd. Agents informed him that due to an executive order, all Federal Property would be closed today to both protesters and picnickers. Though not unprecedented, the executive order was characterized by Lafferty as “extremely rare.”
  • One male demonstrator was arrested. He will be cited and released according to Jim Lafferty. He was involved in a disputed interaction with a woman in the weekly pro-Israel demonstration (with less than 10 people) held several yard away. Most witnesses said that the pro-Israeli woman instigated the confrontation, but only the anti-war demonstrator was arrested.
  • By 3:30 PM, most had departed to attend a 4:00 p.m. interfaith gathering at the Mosque at USC 1075 Exposition Blvd.

[ Westwood Protests Continuing Update | Hundreds Protest Despite Gov't Order ] US forces have begun bombing Kabul. People have gathered at the Westwood Federal building (see feature below), though most have now departed for a 4:00 p.m. interfaith gathering at the Mosque at USC 1075 Exposition Blvd. A list of other events has been circulated, giving more opportunities to gather.

Protest called for Horton Plaza in San Diego, 5 PM [ More Info ]

      [ Bombings Announced ]

      AFGHANISTAN IN THE CROSSHAIRS
While the Guardian reports that the US and UK mission to bomb Afghanistan is on hold pending a repair of the ‘alliance’, many in the US are just learning where to place Afghanistan on the map. We know little about the people and history of the country that Afghanistan Online calls "The Friendliest Country in the World, Possibly the Universe."

It is hard for many of us to imagine dropping bombs on a people who already find themselves terrorized by an enduring civil war, millions of whom sought to escape and now populate the largest refugee camps in the world. The much-vilified Taliban only came into power in 1996 after the US backed mojahedin coalition self-destructed due to in-fighting after first driving out the Soviets [history and analysis].

Now millions more Afghani’s are attempting to flee the country and the feared US retribution. As if this nightmare is not enough; the region is facing a food shortage where many, according to the UN World Food Program risk starvation. Aid agencies were forced to pull out, and as always the withdrawal of aid effects the most vulnerable [plight of Afghani Children]. A Los Angeles relief effort was revealed in an October 1 LA Times story.

Meanwhile the plight of Afghani Women is receiving renewed attention as a BBC documentary on the Revolutionary Association of the Woman of Afghanistan [RAWA] is re-broadcast on CNN; as if the subject is only now timely.
