Concerned people and civil liberties NGOs have been decrying a butterfly effect of the S11 tragedies, the falling white ash of legal documents further obscuring our civil liberties. The Congress is reviewing both its anti-terrorist bill PATRIOT (Provide Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act) and the Ashcroft/Bush Administration ATA (Anti-Terrorist Act). Many civil liberites groups think that both of these acts go too far, that they;

  • Open nonresidents to inhumane detention and make it more difficult for immigrants to obtain asylum status. Lawyer's Center For Human Rights on topic

  • Further remove the firewall between Federal Intelligence Agencies, opening up the possibility for spying on citizens not engaged in criminal activity.Center for Democracy and Technology on the wall

  • Allow for increased and unconstitutional surveillance over the internet.ACLU on this and other topics

  • Define "terrorism" in too broad a term that could lead to thousands of non-violent protesters at an anti-war rally being labeled as conspirators in a terrorist plot. Even House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss, R-FL, told the Los Angeles Times that he is troubled by the implications of a broad definition of terrorism. "The trouble is,'terrorism' is a very broad word and it lends itself to a lot of mischief for people who would abuse common sense." Daybreak Anarchist Collective's statement

    PROTEST PLAN COLOMBIA
    In solidarity with the people of Colombia and their efforts to rid themselves of the US initiative called Plan Colombia, a policy program that many have likened to the US intervention in Vietnam but with the additional factors of DRUGS and OIL, the CSULB Campus Progressives Collective will sponsor a FORUM on U.S. involvement in Latin America called "What's Wrong with Plan Colombia?" This event will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd at 12:00 PM in the USU Small Auditorium at CSULB. On Friday, October 5th at 12:00 PM at the Westwood Federal Building there will be a DEMONSTRATION against Plan Colombia. We are asked to bring signs.
