Several large community meetings have already been held across Los Angeles to stop the proposed elimination of L.A.'s Cultural Affairs Department (CAD). There are few arts organizations or arts festivals in L.A. that do not benefit from CAD grants. Join with thousands of artists, arts professionals, arts advocates, and just plain art lovers in opposing the destruction of L.A.'s Cultural Affairs Department.

Get Informed -- Get Active

February 29th 2004
The Arlington West Memorial Project took place for the second time last Sunday at Santa Monica pier. 560+ crosses were set in the sand directly north of the pier adjacent to the boardwalk. Veterans for Peace's hallowed ground portrayal was highly visible to the thousands who came out for a day at the beach. Each cross represents an American soldier who has died in Iraq. The names, ages, hometowns and circumstances of their deaths were there for all to read on a plaque placed in front of the memorial. Another sign indicated that it would take the entire beach to recognize all of the Iraqi deaths caused by the war. Throughout the day hundreds of beachgoers stopped to witness, read the names, contemplate and talk about this sad reality. Many took the time to write a card with the name of one of the soldiers and place it with a flower on a cross, few passed untouched.
adapted from Frank Dorrel essay

Arlington West takes place in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara by the pier every Sunday. Veterans for Peace plans to continue the project until American troops are no longer fighting in Iraq. AFSC provided a different depiction in Chicago.

Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Scripps College, Harvey Mudd College and Pitzer College have all canceled classes for Wednesday, March 10, in a show of solidarity in response to a hate crime that occurred Tuesday night in a parking lot shared by Pomona and Claremont McKenna colleges. The five colleges are all members of The Claremont College consortium and located on contiguous campuses.

According to reports, a car belonging to a Claremont McKenna faculty member who had just taken part in a forum on hate speech was vandalized sometime between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday. The windows of the car were broken, the tires slashed, and the body of the vehicle spray-painted with racial, misogynist and anti-Semitic epithets. Claremont Police are currently investigating the incident, which has been formally classified as a hate crime. Claremont McKenna College has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to a solution to the crime.
