Garrick Ruiz, Jonathan Mello and Tamara, LA area based activists are all three working with the International Solidarity Movement in Palestine this summer. Watch the newswire under the heading "LA in Palestine" for first person accounts of their experiences there. Let us know if you know of others doing similar work. Garrick's writings are being archived at straybulletins.com.

Reports From Palestine

The two police officers were indicted by the country grand jury, and released on bail today. The case will be transferred to the court in Inglewood. FindLaw has the text of the indictment. The LA Times has it on the front page. Michael Zinzun of CAPA had some comments and news about further work around the case by the Donovan Jackson-Chavis Justice Committee. KPFK in the afternoons and KJLH 4:30 to 6:00 AM have been covering the issue.

Backgrounder on Police Abuse
Police misconduct is not consistently reported, recorded, measured, and prosecuted. It's off the official radar. Research shows that brutality is not individual and random, but part of a system of misconduct. This list of articles is about police abuse.

On Tuesday (July 16) the Comite Zapatista de Los Angeles (CZLA) organized a demonstration across from the Mexican Consulate to show its solidarity with the people of San Salvador Atenco. As part of its grand neo-liberal Plan Puebla Panama, the Mexican Government is planning to build a new mega-airport serving Mexico City in the nearby town and region of San Salvador Atenco. However, the people and farmers of San Salvador Atenco do not want their land taken away from them, and have organized to block the project. Just this past week (July 9-15) the situation escalated, and the people of San Salvador Atenco called for solidarity demonstrations around the world for Tuesday; and the people of LA responded. Read a July 11th report from a CZLA member in Atenco. Also, listen to speeches from the demo.

Naui, an Orange County political activist and organizer, was arrested at a demonstration in Costa Mesa. The protesters were being assaulted with projectiles, and taunted with racist speech. When one taunter was attacked by an anonymous individual, Naui was arbitrarily fingered, and arrested. He needs legal help. Read the article for info.

In an unrelated but similar story, the support group for the Long Beach anarchists who have been imprisoned or arrested, has put out a paper zine explaining their situation. See their website for more info.

Speakers at yesterday's Inglewood rally cried "This happens every day in LA". It appears police abuse is also happening everyday in Long Beach & Orange County, as "Turning the Tide" reports:

Over 800 people packed the Faith United Methodist church in south west LA at Saturday's event for Jackson-Chavis. Speakers ranged from Maxine Waters and Pacifica board member Dick Gregory, to lawyer James Simmons, and activist Michael Zinzun. The community has rallied around the Inglewood beating, and around police abuse in general.

Whistleblower Faces More Troubles The down-on-his-luck videographer and rave deejay Mitchell Crooks is sitting in jail on prior warrants. For a whistleblower, this isn't a good place to be. read more about his situation.

Indymedia Needs Your Help Demonstrations are happening at the Inglewood City Hall every day. IMC is 100% volunteer operated, and needs you to help write stories about the progress of this important situation. Post to the newswire. You can also help directly -- our meeting is this Saturday.
