LA Billboards: Patriotism or Pollution?
Another example of God-Bless-America propaganda? A self-serving ploy for a Disney-employed billboard artist who hides his commercial interests behind "patriotism" and the (misguided?) protection of the ACLU? Or just another piece of pollution on the landscape of the Los Angeles mental environment? Whatever the true nature and intent of this Westwood billboard, it has made a new, hard-to-ignore contribution to our blighted mental landscape of countless billboards and ads. Sara Jane Olson: Withdraw Guilty Plea
Former Symbionese Liberation Army fugitive Sara Jane Olson has asked to withdraw a guilty plea and be tried on charges of attempting to blow up police cars in a conspiracy to murder officers in the 1970s.

The new twist in the long-running case came in a motion unsealed Wednesday that asked Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler to withdraw her plea, which was entered October 31 after an unsuccessful bid to postpone the trial following 9/11. The initial guilty plea was immediately repudiated outside court, then reaffirmed in court November 6.

On the heels of a new Justice Department plan to interview thousands of men from Middle Eastern countries, the American Civil Liberties Union released a pamphlet that offers guidance on what to do when stopped by law enforcement, including the FBI and the INS. [ English version | Spanish version | Arabic version ] Winter is setting in. There is massive drought, and the fall crops have not been planted. Borders are closed. Relief agencies lack crucial infrastructures to get food through to the people who need it. According to the World Food Program, Food First, Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders, occupation of Kabul by United Front (Northern Alliance) forces does not resolve the urgency or difficulty of getting food and other supplies through to people at risk before access is cut off by winter.

STUDENT HUNGER FAST SWEEPS THE NATION
In direct opposition to the bombing of Afghanistan and the belligerent nationalism sweeping the U.S., student organizers are fighting back. SEE THE VIDEO!

Undertaking a “nationally coordinated, non-violent political statement to the world against violence, greed, and suffering”, Occidental College’s Students United For Peace, supported by over 40 professors, organized a Hunger Fast in opposition to the bombing of Afghanistan that quickly spread to 17 other campuses and high schools across the U.S., including Princeton, Oberlin, Boston College, Cornell, SUNY-Oneonta, U. of Oklahoma, Pitzer, Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Scripps, MIT, UC-Santa Cruz, UCLA, Humboldt State, Bates, U. of Texas, U. of Arizona, the Boston Campus Anti-War Coalition, the LA Coalition for World Peace", and Oxford University in the UK.

“When will we demand a more humane, honest, and ethical government? How will we make our voices heard when the mainstream American media strives to belittle and undermine any signs of dissent? How do we let the people in Europe, South and Central America, Afghanistan, and the rest of the world know not all Americans support our country's foreign policy? The young people of America are fed up with its country's hollow words and repulsive actions. We are symbolic of a generation fed up with the racist bullshit it has been fed.” - Students United For Peace

PROMINENT ACTIVIST LISA FITHIAN ARRESTED, STARHAWK DETAINED
Two well-known US activists were stopped by Canadian Immigration Sunday as they tried to enter Ottawa. Starhawk and Lisa Fifthian flew into Canada Sunday night prepared to give non-violent civil-disobedience and direct-action trainings for the upcoming protests against globalization in Ottawa. Ottawa invited the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to meet there this week when their scheduled summit in Washington, DC was cancelled after the September 11 attacks.

After five hours of questioning, Fifthian was ordered to leave Canada, or face arrest. She refused to leave and was arrested Monday. Immigration authorities also seized Starhawk’s computer and sent it to Canadian intelligence for examination.

Starhawk reports:

"On Monday, November 12th, Lisa Fithian and I were travelling together to Ottawa when I was flagged by Immigration for a more extensive screening. We had both been invited by OPIRG (The Ontario Public Interest Research Group) to offer trainings on activism in preparation for upcoming demonstrations against the G20, the IMF and the World Bank which are meeting in Ottawa November 16-19.....

SIEZING DICTATORIAL POWERS, BUSH OK'S SECRET TERRORISM TRIBUNALS
In a further blow to due process, and just one day after the border arrest of a prominent non-violent activist , President Bush authorized the use of special military tribunals tuesday to try non-citizens accused of terrorism, enabling trials to proceed with a ’greater secrecy than in a conventional court.’

Further, as a result of the recently passed Anti-Terrorism Bill, the FBI can now enter your home or office without your knowledge, seize your files, your computer and your property without a warrant.

“There is a grave, hidden danger in this situation…. the reactionary right wing – by which I mean the owners, managers, and supporters of America’s totalitarian, military industrial information complex – have united the nation behind the Bush Administration in a spirit of belligerent nationalism…. With it’s actions and intentions shrouded in secrecy, the Bush Administration, in this respect, fits the classic definition of a fascist dictatorship." - Douglas Valentine "Homeland Insecurity"

Can you feel your freedom slowly slipping away? Does the mainstream media feel particularly persuasive these days? Are you watching TV obsessively, struggling with the cognitive dissonance of compliance/resistance? The Marine Corp. knows why. They've known for quite some time:

“Psychological operations may become the dominant operational and strategic weapon in the form of media/information intervention. Television news may become a more powerful operational weapon that armored divisions.” - Marine Corp. Gazette

And we thought TV was our friend.
